TRACK ATHLETES COMPETE IN CANTON

Bradford Sullivan Counties Special Olympics now has three locations where they train athletes in track and field.  Athletes are trained in Athens, Troy (at Martha Lloyd Community Services), and in Wyalusing.  In order to prepare them for the upcoming sectional event, the athletes were brought together to compete against each other at the local level.  They gathered on Saturday April 6 at the Canton Area School District track and were joined by many volunteers from the Canton Church of Christ and the Knights of Columbus in addition to the volunteer coaches from the three training sites.  Several Mansfield University students volunteered their time, and a special unexpected appearance was made by the Dairy Princess.  All of this support made for a wonderful event where the athletes could show their skills in running and walking track events as well as shot put and mini javelin as field events.
Special Olympics divisions athletes based upon gender, age, and ability in order to create fair competition for every athlete.  At this event, there were 14 track races containing 32 divisions.  In shot put there were 2 divisions, and in mini javelin there were 6 divisions.  Every athlete was able to secure at least one first place ribbon throughout the day.  Whether they acquired the first place or not, every athlete wore a smile despite the chilly weather.
On April 28 these athletes will travel to St. Francis University to compete in the sectional event.  The swimmers from the delegation will also attend this event.  The sectional event is the precursor to the state level event which occurs June 6-8 at Penn State University.
If you are interested in volunteering or supporting the organization, send correspondences and donations to Bradford Sullivan Special Olympics, P.O. Box 405, Wysox, PA 18854 or visit their Facebook page or website https://sopabradfordsulliv.wixsite.com/
